Although most families have some kind of health insurance coverage, many plans only offer partial payment for artificial limbs.
Some even exclude specific prosthetic procedures and technology, such as object-compliant hands, a multi-joint prehensor, electronic hand or fully configured bionic arm, as "not medically necessary" because of the absence of peer-reviewed journal articles, supported by evidence-based prosthetics.
Since most children outgrow a myoelectric prosthesis every 18-24 months, it can be difficult, even for families with good health insurance, to meet the deductibles and co-pays which can add up to several thousand dollars.
When a child, who is an appropriate candidate for an electric prosthesis, is not adequately covered by health insurance for prosthetic services, CEHAP can help you find alternative sources of prosthetic funding for children.
Since 1992, over 90% of the families, working with CEHAP and demonstrating a need for financial assistance, have been relieved of paying out-of-pocket costs for prosthetic services, thanks to the generous contributions of private and public corporations, charitable groups and individuals.
